happy birthday to me

Well, 40 came and went.  No cataclysmic shift of the earth's axis.  Or (more importantly) no sudden appearance of unsightly age spots.  I have decided that 40 is pretty much just like 39.  Chris and I celebrated with an overnight at a 5-star hotel downtown.  The only hotel I've been to that offers a pillow menu...soft? firm? "L" shaped?  It was a nice opportunity to do things I don't usually get to do such as wear shoes that are not flip-flops.  And shop for clothes without someone spurting a bloody nose or having to pee.  It was a fabulous 24 hours with just me and my honey.  The above picture is of me on my 5th birthday.  I had to explain to the kids that the gaudy wallpaper really was in style and the furniture in the background is called a "telephone table."  Their eyes grew bigger and bigger as I explained the horrors of one being unable to walk around or drive while talking on the telephone...that the receiver was actually tied to that box with the buttons on it.  How did we ever survive?

The kids are adjusting well to school and we are back in the groove of homework and activities.  Meagan is a brainiac as usual....getting A's and B's in her advanced classes.  NiNi was having a rough start again with making friends, but we are setting up play dates and hopeful things will turn around.  She is reading chapter books now...Judy Moody, Boxcar Children, etc.  I always love this stage when they really discover the joys of curling up with a good book.  Ethan is in a class with 7 other boys who are all hyperactive, it seems.  His teacher told me the other day that Ethan has become very attuned to another little boy with some significant special needs.  When the other boys are running fast and leaving this kid behind, Ethan will turn around and say "Wait, I get Caleb."  Love his sensitive side:)
